Press Instant pick for a random word, or ask for ten at once. Switch between nouns, verbs, adjectives and easy-to-draw Pictionary words, or spin the word wheel so the whole group sees the word land.
How to use the random word generator
- Choose a list with the chips above the entries: Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives or Pictionary words.
- Set How many words you need and press Instant pick. The words appear under the form.
- Or spin the word wheel: every word is a sector, and the winner pops up in large type — handy on a projector.
Keep No repeats ticked for a batch of different words; untick it if a word may come up twice. Copy puts the batch on your clipboard, one word per line.
Games and lessons with random words
- Pictionary and charades: pick a word from the Pictionary list and draw or act it out while the others guess.
- Story starters: pick three nouns and write a story that uses all of them.
- Grammar practice: pick an adjective and a noun and build a sentence, or pick a verb and change its tense.
- Improv and warm-ups: spin the wheel and talk for one minute about the word that lands.
- Name ideas: combine an adjective with a noun — Brave Rocket, Silent Owl — for team or project names.
Make your own word wheel
Every list is a starting point. Paste your class’s spelling words, foreign-language vocabulary or a list of topics into Entries and the generator draws from them instead. Hide a word for now without deleting it, or give some words a higher weight in Advanced so they come up more often. Share turns the list into a link, so students open the same word wheel on their own devices.
Random, but fair
Every pick comes from your browser’s cryptographic random generator. On the wheel the winner is chosen before the spin starts and the wheel is steered to it, so a harder flick never changes the odds. Need a letter instead of a word? The letter wheel has the whole alphabet, and the drawing ideas wheel gives you a whole scene to sketch.
- How do I generate several random words at once?
- Type the number in How many and press Instant pick. With No repeats ticked every word in the batch is different; Copy puts the list on your clipboard, one word per line.
- Can I use my own word list?
- Yes. Paste your words into Entries, one per line — spelling words, vocabulary for a language class or names of things in your game. Instant pick and the wheel both draw from that list.
- What kinds of words are included?
- Four lists of everyday English: 102 nouns, 81 verbs, 80 adjectives and 60 easy-to-draw words for Pictionary. They are simple, family-friendly words that work in classrooms.
- Is every word equally likely?
- Yes. Words are drawn by your browser's cryptographic random generator, and every word on the list has the same chance unless you give it a different weight in Advanced.
