Random Letter Generator

Spin and the random letter generator lands on one of the 26 letters from A to Z. Use it for word games, spelling drills and any moment you need a letter nobody chose on purpose.

Play word games with the letter wheel

The wheel is a ready-made letter picker for Scattergories-style games, where everyone writes a word for each category starting with the same letter:

  1. Agree on categories: a city, an animal, a food, a famous person, something in the kitchen.
  2. Spin the wheel and read out the letter.
  3. Start a timer, write, compare answers. Only unique answers score.

It works just as well for I spy, alphabet relay races, tongue twisters or choosing the first letter of a story. On a TV or projector, switch to Fullscreen and press Space to spin between rounds.

Remove the hard letters

Few people enjoy a round of animals starting with X. Before you play, delete the letters you do not want — usually X, Q and Z, sometimes Y and J — from Entries. The wheel redraws at once with fewer, bigger sectors. If you would rather keep every letter but make the awkward ones rare, open Advanced and give them a weight of 1 while the common letters get 3.

For several rounds in a row, turn on “Remove winner after spin”. Each letter is used once, and the Results tab keeps the letters already played.

Spelling and phonics practice

Teachers use the letter wheel for quick drills:

  • spin a letter and ask for three words that start with it;
  • spin twice and find a word that contains both letters;
  • replace single letters with sounds such as ch, sh, th or ai for phonics lessons.

Rename the wheel, for example Phonics — week 3, and press Share to send students a link that opens the same wheel. The list also stays saved in your browser for the next lesson.

How random is it?

Each spin draws its result with the browser’s cryptographic random generator before the wheel begins to turn; the animation then lands on that letter. Every letter has the same chance unless you change its weight, and the strength of a flick never matters.

FAQ

Questions

Which letters are on the wheel?
All 26 letters of the English alphabet, A to Z. Delete any line in Entries to remove a letter, or add your own, such as Ch or Sh for phonics practice.
How do I stop the same letter coming up twice?
Turn on “Remove winner after spin” in Settings. Each letter leaves the wheel after it is drawn, so every round gets a new one.
Can I make some letters more likely?
Yes. In Advanced mode give common letters such as S, T or B a higher weight and rare ones such as X or Z a lower one.
Is it a fair way to pick letters for Scattergories?
Yes. The letter is chosen by your browser's cryptographic random generator before the wheel moves, so nobody can steer it.
