TickWheel

Random State Generator

Click to spin · Ctrl + ↵ · DragTap or flick to spin

Spin the wheel and the random state generator picks one of the 50 US states. Narrow it to the Northeast, Midwest, South or West with one click when you want a road trip closer to home.

Spin a random US state

The wheel holds all 50 states in alphabetical order, from Alabama to Wyoming. Click the hub, press Ctrl + Enter or flick the wheel, and the needle picks one. With 50 narrow sectors the labels get small, so the result window always shows the winning state in full. Working on a phone? The random US state generator works the same with a tap or a swipe. Need the states in a different order on the wheel? Press Sort to return to the alphabet or Shuffle to mix them up.

Four regions in one click

The quick sets above the list use the regions of the U.S. Census Bureau:

  • Northeast — 9 states, from Maine to Pennsylvania;
  • Midwest — 12 states, from Ohio to the Dakotas;
  • South — 16 states, from Delaware to Texas;
  • West — 13 states, from Montana to Hawaii.

All 50 states brings the full wheel back, and Undo in the notification restores any list you built yourself.

Ideas for the 50 states wheel

  • Road trips: spin for the next destination, or only within your region for a weekend drive.
  • Geography quizzes: name the capital, the abbreviation or a neighbouring state.
  • School projects: give every student a random state to research and present.
  • A 50-state challenge: cook a dish, read a book or watch a film set in the state the wheel picks.
  • Games: start the license plate game with a random state.

Fair spins

Every state has the same chance unless you change the weights in Advanced. The result is drawn by your browser’s cryptographic random generator before the wheel starts turning, so a harder flick only changes the show, not the outcome. Rename the wheel and press Share to send the same list to your class or your travel buddies.

FAQ

Questions

Which states are on the wheel?
All 50 US states. Washington, D.C. is not a state, so it is not included — type it on a new line in Entries if you want it.
How are the regions defined?
The quick sets follow the four regions of the U.S. Census Bureau: Northeast (9 states), Midwest (12), South (16) and West (13).
Can I avoid getting the same state twice?
Turn on “Remove winner after spin” in Settings. Each state leaves the wheel after it is drawn, and the Results tab keeps the order.
Can I make a wheel of the states I have visited?
Yes. Clear the list and paste your own states, or switch to Advanced and hide the ones you have already been to.
