Random Group Generator

Click to spin · Ctrl + ↵ · DragTap or flick to spin

Paste a list of names, choose how many groups you need and press Make teams. The random group generator shuffles everyone and deals them out evenly, so group sizes never differ by more than one.

Make groups in three steps

  1. Add the names. Paste a column from a spreadsheet or type one name per line in Entries. The counter shows how many people are on the list.
  2. Choose the split. Pick Number of teams to get, say, 3 groups, or People per team to get groups of 4.
  3. Press Make teams. The list is shuffled and dealt out round-robin, so group sizes differ by one person at most. Copy sends the result to your clipboard.

Not happy with the mix? Press Make teams again for a fresh split. Names you hide in Advanced are left out, which is handy when someone is absent today.

Groups of a set size

People per team is the quickest way to make pairs, trios or groups of five. Leftovers join the other groups instead of forming a tiny one: eleven people in pairs become four pairs and one trio. That keeps it fair when you use it as a random partner generator for partner work, peer review or study buddies.

Where a group generator helps

  • Classrooms: project groups, reading circles, lab partners.
  • Workshops and meetings: breakout rooms and discussion tables.
  • Sports and games: five-a-side teams, quiz night tables, board game groups.
  • Events: seating plans and icebreaker groups.

Rename the wheel and press Share to send the same list to a colleague; the link carries the names, not the groups.

Prefer to draw them one by one?

The wheel is still here. Turn on “Remove winner after spin” in Settings and spin: the first name drawn joins group 1, the second joins group 2, and so on, round after round. When one name is left it goes to the last group without a spin, because the wheel needs at least two entries. It takes longer than Make teams, but it is great fun on a projector.

FAQ

Questions

How do I split a list into random groups?
Paste the names into Entries, one per line. Choose Number of teams or People per team, type the number and press Make teams. The groups appear above the list.
Can I make random pairs?
Yes. Choose People per team and type 2. With an odd number of people one group gets three, so nobody is left alone.
Are the groups really random?
Yes. The list is shuffled with your browser's cryptographic random generator, so every split is equally likely. Press Make teams again for a new split.
Can I save the groups?
Press Copy under the groups to paste them into a chat, an email or a spreadsheet. The names themselves stay saved in this browser.
